First Ideas

Why does my hear look so different?

I realize how different my hair looks depending on which position of my head it grows. This idea is about showing when the hair for example becomes dry, broken or fair.

2. Nice or disgusting

Wow so beautiful or rather disgusting?

Why is it that sometimes we see hair as beautiful and nice and sometimes as disgusting? This idea is about finding out what kind of circumstances change our perception of hair and in which ways.

3. My hair is strong

What can my hair carry?

After thinking and thinking and thinking what to do, getting frustrated because I seemed to not find my idea, I finally decided to make my hair show how strong it is.

Though a single hair looks very fragil it can hold quite a lot of weight. Combined it might be even able to hold my weight….maybe.

So what I want to do is to test my hair by allowing it to hold different objects or a bigger quantity of the same object to show its strength. In the end I want to have a construction which shows the contrast between the hair’s fragility and its strength.

This is how it could look like:

1st try:

This construction now is somehow nice to watch, especially when you know thats human hair holding the stones. But it hardly makes the viewer realize what weight the hair actually carries.

Now lets see what my hair can carry:

My hair was able to carry 10 little stones plus the construction till it teared.

  1. I like both approaches and how well the illustrations convey them. Just be aware that these are not ideas yet, they are task descriptions! 🙂

    1. Thank you for your feedback Ralph. After almost getting frustrated I think I found something I really want to do. I think I finally understood what you meant before with the task descriptions. Would be happy about some feedback for the update I just did. Thanks again

  2. I think you really pulled yourself out of the ditch here, great job! Showing the strength of your hair using objects and various structures of hair actually is an idea, not just a task description. And it is a good one at that! It would be interesting to know how you overcame your frustration.

  3. Wow, it is really interesting how much (your) hair is capable of holding! I like the grid-like construction you made and the step-by-step approach. What a pity that you can not really see the hair/ see that is is hair that is holding the stones! Maybe you can think of a visual element to make the hair more visible?

  4. The last test gives you a better feeling of how strong your hair really is but be aware of knots they reduce the breaking load by up to 50 percent.

    1. Thank you for that information Fynn! I actually thought already something like this, but wasn’t expecting 50 percent reduction. That means my hair might be even stronger 🙂 The only problem is, I’m not sure how to fix it without knots.
