What is nature?
Human made structures dominate our natural landscapes.
Nature documentaries however, show a rather romantic image of a pristine nature that includes animals and plants but ignores humans and their structures.
The short documentary “What is nature?” uses the language and aesthetics of a nature documentary and includes humans and their constructions. Distribution boxes, wind turbines and power lines resemble complex anthills, bird nests, or beaver lodges.
Within the context of our exhibition, I decided to turn the video into a three-channel video installation. Each channel was shown on a seperate screen, that had been mounted into a wooden box. The screen in the middle showed the whole video, whereas the other two screens only showed the objects from an other angle. Speakers were installed in the boxes and filled the room with subliminal sounds to give the installation a somewhat living expression.
